Dear Advisory Council member –

Please read the letter below and then complete the form at the bottom of the page.

Three years have passed since the Global Network of Psychologists for Human Rights (GNPHR) was established. Our mission is to promote a human rights-based and oriented psychology, based on the values of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other global human rights documents and instruments. We would like to thank you for agreeing to be on our Advisory council and for your involvement in the furtherance of our shared mission. We value hearing diverse perspectives from all areas of the globe and from different areas within the broad area of psychology.  To that end, we organized a town hall on March 21, 2024, and are hoping to broaden our breadth and reach.

Given that we are a voluntary group of committed professionals and academics in human rights and psychology and have received no outside funding, we are immensely proud of what we have accomplished in 3 short years. These accomplishments include but are not limited to:

  • published more than 40 monthly bulletins
  • published more than 30 blogs
  • held 15 webinars with 25 speakers for more than 1,000 attendees
  • interviewed 9 colleagues and published their stories about psychology and human rights
  • provided resources for specific content areas: covid-19, climate justice, data rights, decolonization/indigenization, mental health, migration / displacement, human rights education, LGBTQI+
  • published a brochure entitled ‘A framework for inspiration’ with suggestions for how to form and organize human rights groups in psychology organizations
  • initiated the GNPHR Network of Human Rights and Psychology groups
  • presented and issued statements.

Bolstered by these accomplishments, we want to expand our reach and to do so we are hoping to draw on your expert knowledge. The Advisory Council exists to expand the activities of the GNPHR. So now, with the growing reach of the GNPHR, we would like to enhance the mandate of the Advisory Council to be more active and participatory in the development and implementation of the activities of the GNPHR than in the past. We are inviting you to consider your contribution to the GNPHR in some of the following ways:

  • propose webinar topics related to psychology and human rights and propose the speakers, especially from the Global South
  • provide us with the links to teaching and learning materials about human rights and psychology (these can be single lecture outlines, syllabi, reading lists)
  • take a content area of your expertise and send a bibliography of relevant articles/books about human rights and that area, along with a paragraph-length summary of the area
  • write a Blog (opinion piece, up to 1500 words, on a relevant human rights / psychology topic
  • write a short report/reflection at the end of each year about the most relevant topic(s) in psychology and human rights in that year from your perspective and/or region
  • write examples about psychologists protecting or harming human rights – whether it’s your story or a story you know of
  • make an interview with someone involved with human rights and psychology
  • be co- or guest-editor of the Bulletin for one or all issues
  • provide content for the website by taking care of one of the topical areas

We hope that you find this list inspires you to think further about the development of the GNPHR. You are also welcome to propose other ways of participation and other ways to use the Advisory Council, and we will gladly consider it.

By the beginning of the next year we will start the new 2025-2027 Advisory Council’s mandate. We invite you to continue being part of the Advisory Council by taking one of the suggested expanded roles. Please let us know by October 1, 2024 whether you would like to continue being in the Advisory Council in the new three years’ mandate (January 1, 2025 -December 31, 2027) and how you would like to contribute, together with three sentences describing your expertise, or whether you would prefer to end your term in 2024.

With best wishes
GNPHR Steering Committee
